The First Autism-Friendly Travel Destination in the World
Proof that Surfside Beach is progressive and values its family-friendly atmosphere, it is the first autistic friendly travel destination in the nation.
The town council signed the proclamation in January 2016, making Surfside Beach the first place in the world to formally adopt the designation. It came from a Surfside resident, Becky Large, founder of the Champion Autism Network and mother of a son on the autism spectrum. Town employees and the Police and Fire Departments have all completed autism supportive certification.
The town marked ten years of the designation in January 2026. For families for whom lights, sounds, crowds and unpredictability make travel difficult, it is a genuinely different proposition — and it says something about the town that residents choose to live in.

The Surfside Beach Pier
The town-owned fishing pier is the centre of Surfside Beach. Originally built in 1953 and rebuilt several times since, it was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and reopened in March 2024 after a long rebuild.
Beyond the pier, the town maintains seven public parks with tennis, bocce and shuffleboard, and 36 beach access points. The beaches are cleaned daily and supervised by lifeguards and police, and several access points offer showers, restrooms and accessible ramps.
Surfside Beach Real Estate
Housing here reflects the town's character. Raised beach homes sit alongside updated brick ranch style houses and newer construction, with no high-rise resorts along the oceanfront. Condos are available both near the beach and further back toward Highway 17.
